Dorado Beach Engagement Session

I recently met up with Shay and Carlos for a sunrise engagement photo session on the beach in beautiful Dorado, Puerto Rico. I knew the early start time wouldn’t phase them since they both work as flight attendants for Delta. They live in the Us and have family in both Puerto Rico and Mexico, which is where the ceremony will be. It was really important to them that Puerto Rico was incorporated into their wedding story and here are the results!

I love the calmness of shooting in the early morning and how the quality of light changes so much so quickly. It starts and shifts from a dull, subtle blue to glowing hard, warm light. I am pleased we took advantage of the conditions presented to us and created some really nice images together.

Afterwards, we met up in Old San Juan to take a few more shots before they had to jump on a plane back home.

Old San Juan Wedding Proposal and Engagement Shoot

Planning secret proposal shoots is so much fun. It’s such a thrill to help plan and then capture such momentous and meaningful moments. It’s a funny story of how this connection even happened in the first place.

My mother-in-law ran into D’Andree’s father at a pickleball tournament in Arizona and got to talking about how his son is going to Puerto Rico on vacation and is going to propose to his girlfriend. She mentioned I am a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico and offer engagement shoots… and the rest is in the books!

D’Andree and I had a lot of contact ahead of time, and even right up to the last munte to find and settle on the perfect spot.

Here’s some highlights from the mini-session,

Celebrating Their 5 Year Wedding Anniversary in Old San Juan – A Travel Photography Session

Nicole and Derek found me through Shoot My Travel and we met up in Old San Juan to take some photos, celebrating their 5 year wedding anniversary. This adventurous couple told me they love to get photo sessions when they travel and that afterwards they hardly take any others the rest of the time. They said it’s nice to not be burdened by getting photos and relying on asking strangers to snap a photo to remember their trip by. It gives them more time to soak in the experience and be present in the moment knowing their experience has been captured beautifully.

Surprise Wedding Proposal in the Amazing Natural Beauty of Puerto Rico

Making images that combine different genres of is one of the ways that I love to explore the craft of photography. I love it when I am able to use elements of Landscape, Portraiture, Documentary, and Wedding Photography simultaneously to create unique and meaningful images.

Steven wanted to propose to his girlfriend Ashley on their vacation to Puerto Rico. He wanted to pop the question in a spectacular way at a beautiful location. We coordinated ahead of time and came up with a game plan. We decided on the location and the exact spot. I arrived early to find my angle and then act like a tourist so that Ashley wouldn’t suspect anything. The resulting engagement photo session…

Epic!

The cliffs and arches of La Cueva del Indio provided for the perfect backdrop to this awe-inspiring moment!

Cheers to Steven and Ashley!

Puerto Rico Destination Wedding – La Concha Resort – Sally and Luis

This incredibly intelligent (and adorable) pair of Neurologists had an elegant beach ceremony at La Concha Resort, followed by a reception at the iconic La Perla in the Condado neighborhood of San Juan.  The groom grew up on the island, so it made perfect sense to have their destination wedding in Puerto Rico.

They were looking for the best wedding photographer who could tell the story of the day in a natural, unforced way. I always encourage my couples to just enjoy the day, be present and have fun. Weddings are naturally filled with photogenic moments. There’s no need to devote a ton of time for elaborate portrait production setups. A good documentary photographer will be able to anticipate these moments and be ready to capture them in an artistic way.

I met up earlier in the week with the couple for a short portrait session in Old San Juan and hung out for a beer afterwards. If there’s time permitting, getting to meet each other before the wedding is always a good idea. We were able to capture some of the architecture, history, and ‘feel’ of Puerto Rico by adding on this mini-session.

Bahamas Destination Wedding – Grand Hyatt Baha Mar – AnnMarie & Josh

I had the privilege to photograph another beautiful destination wedding at Grand Hyatt Baha Mar in Nassau, Bahamas. I always love to photograph destination weddings there. The planning staff at the resort always are very professional and they make sure they put on a great event every time. Wildflowers took care of flowers and decorations.

AnnMarie and Josh, like most people, are self-described introverts. They don’t feel exactly comfortable with a lot of attention thrown towards them and a camera thrust in their faces. That’s why I always approach wedding photography in a relaxed, easy-going manner. My goal is to make you feel comfortable and forget that I am there. The way I shoot weddings , using a Documentary/Photojournalism style, means that it doesn’t take a huge production to get beautiful and meaningful images.

Everyone always asks me at the start of a wedding day, “What am I supposed to do?”.

My response is, “Well, nothing. Just have fun, enjoy your company, be present, and soak in the moment!”

A wedding is naturally full of photogenic moments. The trick is being able to anticipate them and be ready to capture them. Having to set something up or arrange anything is unnecessary if you are present in the moment.

Here are some of the highlights from AnnMarie and Josh’s gallery,

Old San Juan Wedding Photography Session

I met up with Sally and Luis the week before their destination wedding at La Concha Resort for a portrait session in Old San Juan.  They considered having the ceremony in the plaza next to Castillo San Cristobal but ultimately opted for a beach ceremony.  Because of that, I am especially glad we had the opportunity to get some images that capture the history and feel of the area.

One of my favorite quotes is “Life happens when you’re busy making plans”. We went into the session with a rough plan of where we wanted to go but the best images were made spontaneously and unscripted along the way. That’s the thrill of being a documentary style photographer; you never know what exactly you are walking into and what will present itself. Each session is really a collaborative creative endeavor and I’m not just shooting down a list. Of course you prepare and make sure you cover your basics, but when the magic happens, you gotta be ready to throw it all out the window and change gears. Be observant. Try. Fail. Keep trying. Peel the onion.

Here are some of my favorite ‘moments of magic’ from the session:

Baha Mar Bahamas Destination Wedding

It was a pleasure meeting and working with Tina and Danijel for their island destination wedding at Hyatt Baha Mar in Nassau, Bahamas. The ceremony was in Baha Mar’s beautiful Wedding Chapel with reception held at the Palms Terrace.

A laid back couple and a fun group of guests is a winning recipe to capture some fun and meaningful moments. Thanks Tina and Danijel! Here are some of my favorite shots from the day.

Hyatt Baha Mar Beach Destination Wedding – Ashley & Derek

One of the newest resorts in the Caribbean, Hyatt Baha Mar, is truly a spectacle to behold. It’s the perfect venue for a beach destination wedding. It helps that my house is so close to the resort I can walk there. I love walking to work if I can.

Ashley and Derek’s wedding ceremony was on the beach and the reception was held on the 25th floor balcony. I really enjoyed photographing their wedding. With around 30 guests attending, I had a chance to meet everyone and really gel with the crowd.

I was able to shoot the entire wedding without using any flashes and only using ambient light the entire. To me this is ideal. It’s definitely more challenging doing it this way (I had flashes in my bag ready to go still), but I just think the results look so much more natural and give the viewer a truer sense of the atmosphere and general vibe. Years of shooting Junkanoo has made me a low-light, fast movement ninja. Nothing scares me anymore. Here are some of my favorites from the day:

Hyatt Baha Mar: Bahamas Destination Wedding – Erik Kruthoff Photography

I love it when my couples are just chill and have a go-with-the-flow attitude. The bride and groom from this Bahamas destination wedding, Dane and Amanda, were definitely that way. They trusted that I would do my thing and get some great images of the day and I know they were grateful. Now they can relive the experience over and over by looking back at them. That’s why I especially like shooting in a photojournalism style. You really can get some great storytelling images while giving a real depiction of the emotions and events on these special days. I can’t stand when I see other wedding photographers only taking super cheesy and cliche photos.

The newly opened and magnificent Baha Mar resort in Nassau, Bahamas served as the perfect place for this wedding. There’s so many beautiful spots that you don’t even need to be on the beach.

Here’s what the bride’s mother had to say afterwards,

Erik,

OMG, Amanda and I just sat down together and looked at all the pictures.  I’m speechless.  I love all of them and I am so grateful that you were able to catch all these beautiful images so we can remember our happy celebration.  Thank you again. We are so truly grateful.
Thanks,
D.G.
